VOUCHERS TO MAKE PLAYING FOOTY CHEAPER FOR SYDNEY FAMILIES
AFL NSW/ACT has unveiled its new ‘Play Your Way’ voucher scheme, which aims to increase participation of kids across Sydney and directly benefit the families who are returning or taking up NAB AFL Auskick and junior football for the first time.
As an industry, the AFL understands the important role football and sport can play in the development and wellbeing of kids and their families. Therefore, it is a priority to ensure everyone who wants to play Australian Rules Football has access to join a program or their local club team, either as a new or returning participant.
The Play Your Way vouchers will provide:
- $100 off registration fees for NAB AFL Auskick and junior participants in western Sydney (defined as the Sydney Hills region, Sydney West and Sydney South West) participating in Under 13s competition and younger
- $50 off registration Sydney-wide for players transitioning from club NAB AFL Auskick to junior competition
- $50 off registration Sydney-wide for players transitioning into a community club via one of the AFL connect programs running through schools (including school competitions, after school NAB AFL Auskick programs and more).
While participating in Australian Rules Football is comparatively budget friendly, the Play Your Way vouchers will remove a substantial cost to get involved in the game, particularly in Western Sydney, making it a more accessible and affordable option for more families across Sydney.
Head of AFL NSW/ACT, Andrew Varasdi, said: “Australian Rules Football is a game for everyone and we want to make sure all those who want to play, can play.
“Families across Sydney, and especially Western Sydney, have told us the registration costs are a principal reason their kids stopped playing footy – we wanted to introduce these vouchers so they directly benefit families help to reduce cost as a barrier and burden.
“The Play Your Way vouchers aim to alleviate cost concerns when registering for our sport and ensure more kids in Sydney can stay active and enjoy all the benefits of team sport.
“I hope our community takes advantage of this positive initiative and we see more kids getting involved in NAB AFL Auskick and junior footy than ever before.”
Executive General Manager of Game Development at the AFL, Rob Auld, said: “It has been well documented that the AFL sees great growth potential in Sydney – particularly Western Sydney – and these vouchers will help to connect more people with our game who may have never previously been involved or want to continue playing.
“Australian Rules Football has had a huge impact on generations of people and the AFL is committed to ensuring the game can be experienced and enjoyed by as many people as possible. There are many ways to play, coach, umpire or volunteer and the Play Your Way vouchers will go a long way to making the game accessible and affordable for kids and families from Sydney.”
Local clubs have been informed on the process and how their prospective participants can access the Play Your Way vouchers. Simply follow the normal registration process via the play.afl club finder and Play HQ.
These vouchers are available now and ready to use.
The Play Your Way voucher scheme has been put in place to help grow participation across greater Sydney and build on the solid base in NSW and the ACT, after more than 71,000 participants registered for local football, NAB AFL Auskick, NAB AFL Superkick, AFL Nines and other ways to play in 2024. This represents 19 per cent year-on-year growth on the number of registered participants across the state and territory.
The AFL has enshrined 10 per cent of the game’s total revenue to go towards game development and community football, which will ensure community football funding continues to grow and the AFL can invest in volunteers, programs and clubs to support the game’s growth.
